Shainshuipo and Japan
On Saturday 12th August 2000, John Marriott, father of COFEPOW members, Richard Marriott and Pamela Broadhead, died aged 85.
John was in the Royal Engineers, stationed in Hong Kong when it fell on Christmas Day 1941. He was a FEPOW at Shainshuipo and then from January 1943, to the cessation of hostilities, at Omine coal mine in Japan.
With fellow POW's, John was liberated in August 1945. Leaving Japan in late September 1945, he travelled via Manila, Seattle, Vancouver and across Canada to arrive home in Willenhall, Staffs, on November 19th 1945.
Pam is now researching this period at Omine, hoping to make a permanent record of it and would like to hear from anyone who might have any information. She has been in contact with FEPOW's from Tasmania and hopes to find more of the Canadians that their father mentioned.
